From a Special Correspondent
A campaign has been going on for some time in the Scandinavian press in support of proposals to award the Nobel Peace Prize to Archbishop Helder Camara of Olinda and Recife, the Brazilian hierarchy's most outspoken advocate of social reform.
Among those supporting his candidacy are 40 SocialDemocratic members of the West German Parliament. He is also proposed by Scandinavian bishops, and warmly suppprted by Brazilian workers.
Mr. August Schou, Director of the Nobel Institute in Oslo, confirmed that 47 candidates had been put forward — about the same number as last year, when the peace prize cornmittee, appointed by Norway's Parliament decided for unknown reasons not to award any prize and transferred the prize money to the Nobel Fund, The West German Chancellor, Herr Willy Brandt, was awarded the 1971 Peace Prize.
President Nixon and President Tito of Yugoslavia are among candidates nominated for the prize, according to informed sources in Oslo.
They said 69 prominent people in various countries had proposed Pres:dent Nixon.
President Tito had been proposed by Syria's Prime Minister, Mr. Mahmoud AlAyoubi, also by Denmark's Foreign Minister, Mr. Knud Andersen. and its former Foreign Minister, Mr. Poul Harding.
Mr. Schou said this year's prize money amounted to 510,000 Swedish Crowns (£48,400). With the prize money go a gold medal and a diploma.
The winner will be handed these at a ceremony at Oslo University on December 10, the anniversary of the death of Dr. Alfred Nobel, the Swedish inventor of dynamite.
