Liverpool's two new bishops consecrated

A BISHOP must have the courage to be a witness for all times and in all seasons, Archbishop Derek Worlock told all those gathered in Liverpool's Metropolitan Cathedral for the episcopal ordination of Mgr
14 Kevin O'Connor and Fr Anthony
' I litchen, on Tuesday evening. Bishop O'Connor and Bishop !. Hitchen who will serve as auxiliaries in Liverpool were con . secrated by Archbishop Warlock, Bishop Joseph Gray. Auxiliary of
1 iverpool, and Bishop Augustine Harris of Liverpool. The 11 other Visiting bishops took part in the ceremony of the laying on of hands and the prayer of consecration.
The Archbishop told the new bishops that the scope of their contacts and responsibilities would now be broadened but he assured them that they would be
supported by "that love and loyalty for which Liverpool priests and people are renowned.'
The ceremony was attended by representative of Liverpool's non Catholic clergy — among them Bishop David Sheppard, the Anglican Bishop of Liverpool, the Rev P. W. Beaman, the president of the Free Church Federal Council. and the Rev John Williamson, representing the United Reformed Church.
Referring to Liverpool's healthy spirit of ecumenism, the Archbishop said: "Liverpool's expansive love and loyalty will encourage the further efforts of our new team of bishops to achieve that total Christian unity which we all desire, and for which the presence here tonight of Merseyside's other Christian leadc, s is such a great encouragement."
