CANDIDATE FOR LEEDS

Catholic Teacher Stands For Third Time
MR. Charles E. Kirwin, a master " at St. Charles's Senior Boys' School, Leeds, was on Wednesday again adopted as Conservative candidate in South-East Leeds for the forthcoming Parliamentary by-election. He contested the seat in 1950 and last year, halving the Labour majority. Mr. Kirwin was spokesman for the Catholic lay societies in Leeds four years ago before the city council, when he protested against the grant for a clinic giving birth control advice.
He was the first chairman of the Leeds Catholic Consultative Committee, in which all the Catholic societies are represented. For some time he was also diocesan chairman of the Sword of the Spirit, and is a former president of the Leeds Catholic Teachers' Association.
Before going to Si Charles's School he taught at St. Joseph's, Leeds, St. Michael's (Jesuit) College, Leeds, and St. Mary's Training College, Strawberry Hill, Middlesex.
