SEEK ELECTION
`Catholic Worker' editor a candidate
FORTY-NINE Catholics-20 of them M.P.s—are at present known to be candidates in the General Election. Last year the number was 61.
Mr. John Maude, Conservative, and Mr. J. Mulvey, Irish Nationalist, are not seeking re
election.
Among candidates standing for the first time is Mr. R. P. Walsh, editor of the Catholic Worker. Another is Mr. John Tiernan, C.Y.M.S. diocesan president, who is opposing Mrs. Braddock in Liverpool where she has defeated two other Catholic candidates in the last two General Elections.
Two Catholic women are standing —Lady Abraham (Lib.), and Miss Dodo Lees (Lab.). who served with the French Maquis. The 20 Catholic M.P.s seeking re
election are listed on page 5. The remaining 29 are: Ardwick : Councillor E. Hodson, Con.
Bolton East : Mr. P. Ingress Bell, Con. Old Stonyhurst boy, contesting the seat for the second time. Barrister, former captain of the Oxford University Boxing Club. Married. three children.
Bridlington : Councillor G. McQuade, Lab. Broxtowe, Notts : Mr. Anthony Gorman, Con.
Cardiff : Mr. L. Hallinan, Con.
Cheltenham : Mr. J. Finnigan, Lab.
Coventry South : Mr. John BiggsDavison, M.A., Con. Triple Exhibitioner at Oxford, specialist in foreign and Imperial affairs, co-founder of Pakistan Society, speaks Urdu, Baluchi and French. Served in the war in Iceland, Africa, Gibraltar, and later held administrative and magisterial posts in the Punjab. Aged 33. married, two children.
Dagenham : Mr. N. A. F. St. JohnStevas, Con. Former President of the Oxford Union.
Derby North : Councillor P. Hughes. Con.
Durham North-West : Mr. James Quigley. Con. Member of the Tyneside Catholic Social Guild and an advocate of co-partnership in industry. Married, two children. Candidate at last election.
Hackney South : Mr. P. A. G. Rawlinson, Con.
Hamilton : Lt.-Col. R. C. M. Monteith. MC., Con. Old Ampleforth boy. aged 36.
Hove: Mr. J. R. Colclough, Lib.
Lancaster : Miss Dodo Lees, Lab. Served with French Maquis behind enemy lines, won Croix de Guerre. Worked with French Young Christian Workers. Lecturer in economics. Contested Bournemouth East at last election.
Leeds South-East : Mr. C. E. Kirwin, Con. Master at St. Charles's Sc: ool. Leeds. a leader in the Sword of the Spirit and other Catholic societies. At the last election he reduced the majority of Major James Milner, Deputy Speaker, from 15,845 to 8,732.
