According to French authorities, Fernandez Krohn then became active in a radical organisation, the Sedevacantistes who believe that no Pope has been validly elected since the death of Pope Pius XII in 1958. Fernandez Krohn became acquainted with them about the time of his ordination.
Born in Madrid, Fernandez Krohn studied law and economics at the University of Madrid before beginning studies for the priesthood at Archbishop Lefebvre's seminary in Switzerland.
A Spanish schoolmate, who asked not to be named. described the priest as "intelligent, cold, calculating and with a great sense of humour." He could face a prison erm o years if' found guilty of trying to kill the Pope. The attacker, who ran forward and was able to get within several yards of the pontiff before he was overwhelmed, reportedly shouted "down with the Pope" and "Down with Vatican II" or "death to the Second Vatican Council" as he was dragged away by police. The scuffle occurred at the end of an evening prayer service.
The Pope did not perceive anything was wrong until he noticed a man who looked I ike a priest lying on the ground amid the commotion. Pope John Paul then moved forward and blessed the man several times.
