Massive security for Spanish trip
THROUGHOUT SPAIN 90,000 people, including catechists and members of parish youth groups, are participating in special classes to prepare them for Operation Pax '82.
The training is not for a new peace movement but for a nationwide security plan designed to protect Pope John Paul and those who come to see him during his visit to Spain, from October 31 to November 9.
Operation Pax, based on the Latin word 'pax" meaning "peace," will involve about 90,000 people — 10,000 local police officers, 30,000 Spanish soldiers and 50,000 volunteers according to Spanish Interior Minister Juan Jose Roson.
Officials of the government's Civil Protection Agency are travelling around Spain to provide instruction for the volunteers, who will be primarily involved in crowd control, traffic direction and first aid.
Operation Pax involves four operations: a basic plan of civil protection, similar to that used during the World Cup soccer championship earlier this year; a protection and medical backup system for the 62-yearold pope; co-ordination of air transportation of the Pope and others involved in his visit; and traffic control.
Mindful that an attempt was made on the Pope's life by a Spaniard -last May in Fatima, Portugal. Spanish authorities are placing special emphasis on papal protection.
Father Juan Fernandez Krohn, a 32-year-old Spaniard and illicitly ordained priest, has been held in Lisbon, Portugal, on charges of attempted murder of the Pope since May 14, two days after he had approached Pope John Paul with a 15-inch bayonet during an evening prayer service.
