Liverpool hands key to bishops
BY CECILIA BROMLEYMARTIN CATHOLIC ARCHBISHOP Derek Worlock and Anglican Bishop David Sheppard have received the Honourary Freedom of Liverpool.
The two Merseyside Church leaders were honoured jointly for their contribution to the city and Church life.
Archbishop Worlock spoke in his address of the lengthy cooperation between the two Church leaders: "It is sometimes said that Bishop David and I are so much of a mind that we are able to speak for each other".
After many years in Liverpool, they have both developed very strong feelings for a city which Bishop Worlock said has faced more hurts then any other city in England. "You could not pay me a higher honour", he said in his address, "than to give me, a Southern lad come north, the freedom of this great city."
The Order of Ceremony included the choristers of the Metropolitan Cathedral of Christ the King singing "Alleluya" composed by Philip Duffy and dedicated to the Honorary Freemen.
The Lord Mayor of Liverpool presented the illuminated freedom scrolls to Archbishop Derek and Bishop David, and their respective Coats of Arms appear on each other's scrolls.
Peter Heneghan, press officer for the Liverpool diocese, called the occasion a "recognition for a famouspartnership between Archbishop Derek Worlock and Bishop David Sheppard; a partnership between Churches, and between the City and the Churches."
