NORWAY ENDS BAN ON THE JESUITS
NORWAY'S Parliament has voted by 111 to 31 to end the 142year-old constitutional ban _against the Jesuits. The repeal was sponsored by the Government.
The Constitution of 1814 stated that "the Jesuit and other monkish orders shall not be tolerated." It also excluded Jews.
The ban against Jews was lifted in 1851. and in 1897 the provision excluding "other monkish orders" was rescinded.
The proposal to remove the ban against the Jesuits was opposed by extremist elements in the Lutheran Church, but six of the seven Lutheran Bishops favoured the removal.
Fat years Jesuits from various countries have been freely admitted into Norway. though only when they entered simply as individuals.
