MOVE TO END JESUIT BAN

In Switzerland
AMOTION to abolish an article of the Swiss Constitution banning Jesuits in Switzerland was accepted by the Council of States—the Upper House—last week.
The motion, drafted by Ludwig von Moos, a member from the small Catholic canton of Obwalden, also calls for the repeal of another article which forbids the reopening of convents closed after the Civil War of 1846-47, or the foundation of new convents or religious orders.
It will now he put before the National Council—the Lower House.
If both Houses approve the motion, it will he submitted to a national referendum.
The ban on the Jesuits reads: " The Society of Jesus and societies affiliated with it may not be admitted into any part of Switzerland, and all activities in church and schools are forbidden to their members.
" This prohibition may be extended by federal decree to other religious orders whose activities are dangerous to the State. or disturb the peace between the various religious bodies."
