RU MOU RS that the 36th International Eucharistic Congress in Rio de Janeiro next year is to be suspended because of the political situation in Brazil have been officially denied.
There has been no change whatsoever in the arrangements and the congress will be held from July 14 to 24.
The Prefect of Rio de Janeiro has now authorised the use of the great square for the solemn functions and Cardinal de Barros Camara has asked the faithful to send their offerings of gold and precious stones for the gigantic monstrance for the congress. Twenty Cardinals—headed by a Papal Legate yet to be named by the Holy Father-500 Archbishops and Bishops and about 1.000,000 laity are expected to take part in the ceremonies. Workers have already begun filling in a portion of the Bay of Guanabara—one of the most beautiful in the world—which will be the site of the congress. The part of a 40-year-old plan to work is widen the Santos Dumont airport and to provide a site for highways, parks and housing developments along a mile-long stretch of shore. This site affords a clear view of the gigantic statue of Christ of the Corcovado overlooking the city of Rio. Midnight Mass will be celebrated on the congress site on New Year's Eve to proclaim 1955 as a Eucharistic Year in Rio. The Mass will be preceded by a procession of lighted boats across the bay.
Thirteen committees are planning the congress. One is organising national campaigns for wheat and wine and for wax for altar candles for the extraordinary number of Masses and Holy Communions during the congress.
