EUCHARISTIC CONGRESS Rio de Janeiro, 1955 The Holy Father has
chosen Rio de Janeiro, capital of Brazil, for the 36th International Eucharistic Congress in 1955—a year earlier than was originally proposed.
Soon after the congress in Barcelona it was decided that in future it should be held at intervals of four years instead of two. •
It is understood that the Brazilian authorities asked the Pope to allow the next congress to be held in 1955 to avoid the Brazilian general elections the following year.
