Body of American Martyr Lies in State

The Rev. Gerard A. Donovan, first missionary from Maryknoll Seminary, New York, to receive the palm of martyrdom, will be buried at the Maryknoll headquarters in Ossining, N.Y. Fr. Donovan laboured for seven years in the missionary fields of China where in October of last year he was kidnapped and strangled to death by bandits near Hopei, Manchukuo, where his body lay in the snow until February of this year.
When his remains were discovered they were sent to the United States on the Japanese liner the Titibu Marti and arrived at San Francisco, April 25, where the body was received by dignitaries of the Church and transferred to St. Mary's Cathedral, where it lay in state for three days.
