CARDINAL HEADS SPANISH ORDER OF KNIGHTHOOD Position Previously Held Only by King

Cardinal Thomas y Goma, Archbishop of Toledo, Primate of Spain, has been raised to the highest rank of the famous Spanish Order of Knighthood of Isabella of Spain.
General Franco has appointed the aged Cardinal Chancellor and President of the Order, a position formerly held only by the King.
In this way General Franco has again made clear his desire to cement the Catholic tradition of Spain into the fabric of the new State.
The Cardinal was made a Knight of the Order in 1935 in recognition of his defence of the Spanish community in the world in a speech at Buenos Aires in 1934.
General Franco visited Cardinal Goma when the tatter was receiving radium treatment in Madrid. Cardinal Goma is back in Toledo. Though improved, he is still gravely ill, but he continues to direct important diocesan affairs.
The Cardinal will be 71 this August.
