Franco Honours U.S. Prelates Four membere of the U.S. Hierarchy are among the eight Americans honoured by General Franco with the decoration, Grand Cross of Isabella the Catholic. They are: Cardinal William O'Connell, Archbishop of Boston ; Cardinal Dennis Dougherty, Archbishop of Philadelphia ; Mgr. Michael J. Curley, Archbishop of Baltimore and of Washington : and Mgr. Thomas E. Molloy, Bishop of Brooklyn.
The four laymen honoured are; Ogden H. Hammon, former United States Ambassador to Spain , Dr. Alexander Hamilton Rice, of Boston ; Commendatore Gaetano Vecchiotti, Italian Consul-General in New York ; and William Cameron Forbes, former Arnhassador to Japan. The Order of Isabella the Catholic is the highest Spanish order of chivalry, of which the late Cardinal Coma was the first head not a king.
Japanese Books in English for Vatican Library
Professor Joseph Shinjihe Jokibe, of the Imperial University of Commerce of Kobe and member of the Japanese Mission which came to Rome at the end of last May, has just given to the Vatican Library a collection of publications on modern Japan, written in English. These works, the authors of which are among the greatest Japanese contemporary writers, offer a complete picture of present-day Japanese life and thought.
The Catholic University of Milan, the Ambrosiana library, the University of Rome and various other higher institutes of culture, have also received from Professor Jokihe a series of works similar to those donated to the Vatican Library. By so doing Professor Jokibe has carried out the tank which had been entrusted to him as a mem
ber of the Japanese Mission Professor Jokibe, who is a Catholic, as are three others who were members of the Mission, studied in Rome from 1920 to 1925.
Military Honours for Cardinal Goma: General Franco ordered military honours to be accorded the late Cardinal on occasion of the funeral on Saturday last at Toledo Cathedral, " in consequence of the eminent services rendered by the illustrious prolate during the Spanish Civil War."
German Catholics Give to Spain: Mgr. William Bernina, Bishop of Osnabruck, is leaving for Spain es an emissary of the German episcopacy to the Spanish Church to hand fiver a gift of vestments, appointments for the celebration of Mass, and other ecclesiastical equipment to take the place of those lost during the Spanish civil war, Catholic in Canadian Cahinet.—Angus L. Macdonald, Catholic Premier of Nova Scotia, has been named to the enlarged Dominion Cabinet. Macdonald was named Defence Minister for Naval Services, and will take office in about a week when an Act is passed.
Spanish Prisoners Freed: The Council of Ministers has set at liberty 1,205 prisoners who have redeemed their sentences by labour. The Council also allocated 1,500,000 pesetas for the construction and restoration of churches, This year's 109,000,000 pesetas will be expended for 120,000 old age pensions.
Cardinal's Titular Church Still Open.— Cardinal Hinsley's titular church in Rome, Santa Susanna, is not, contrary to certain Press reports to close. The church, which is in charge of the American Paulist Fathers, is still open daily.
Theresa Neumann In Good Health.— Theresa Neumann, stigmatized peasant girl, of Konnersreuth, Bavaria, is well and hearty. She has recently undertaken some trips into the neighbourhood and continues to take a very active interest in all matters pertaining to the Church.
