This Cardinal Was One Of The Most Outstanding Patriots Of The Century
• Cardinal Goma y Tomas, Archbishop of Toledo and Primate of Spain, died at Toledo on Friday last, August 23, four days after his seventy-first birthday.
The five-foot crucifix which Cardinal Hinsley presented to the Spanish Primate in May last stood at the foot of the coffin during the lying-in-state which took place on Saturday in the Archbishop's Palace.
The burial was on Sunday in the Sagrario Chapel of the Cathedral. Cardinal Goma, who immediately associated himself with the National cause when General Franco raised his standard, and whose name headed the list of signatures to the collective pastoral letter of the Spanish hierarchy to the bishops of the whole world, was one of the most outstanding Spaniards of this century, and a great patriot.
The Cardinal. who had been seriously ill since March, bad expressed a wish to die in Toledo. He had undergone a relapse on Tuesday during the journey from Pamplona, where he had been since last month following treatment in Madrid.
FIRST REPUBLICAN BISHOPS
Mgr. Goma and Mgr. Perez, Bishop of Cadiz, were the first Spanish Bishops appointed to a See under the Republican regime.
Mgr. Goma wrote numerous huoks, which directed the Christian development of society in all its ranks. He sat on the International Papal commission of ten theologians to study and report on the " Universal Mediation of the Virgin Mary," with a view to defining the dogma.
At the Eucharistic Congress In Buenos Aires in 1934 he was the principal speaker at the " Day of the Race " Session, and his discourse was hailed as a kind of " Hispanic Gospel." (Hispanidad).
GENERAL FRANCO HONOURS HIM In a gesture toward the promotion of his desire for Catholic unity General Franco recently appointed the Cardinal Chancellor and President of the Order of Isabel la Catolice.
The Cardinal was made a Knight of the Order in 1935, in recognition of his defence of the Spanish community in the world in his speech at the Buenos Aires Eucharistic Congress.
Mgr. Goma was a man of immense learning and extremely active mind; as a young man he perfected the mechanism of the paper-making machine in the factory owned by his parents, and subjected the first aeroplane to land at Tarragona to a close scrutiny. He was an enthusiastic photographer, and an amateur artist and musician.
Right up to the last moment, he was preoccupied with the needs of Spain, writing private letters, shouldering his great sense of responsibility and the enormous work he had to do, in spite of his age and his sufferings, out of love for the Church and Spain.
