Parish pushes BBC into Temptation climb-down

by Joanna Moorhead A CATHOLIC community in St Helens has been instrumental in getting the BBC to drop its plans to show the controversial film The Last Temptation of Christ.
Fr Anthony 13ullen of St Bartholomew's Church, Rainhill, and members of his congregation alerted their local MP, Gerry Bermingham, to the plan to screen the film, which suggests Christ had a sexual relationship with Mary Magdalene. Mr Bermingham agreed to take up their campaign to stop the BBC from showing the film, and an appeal by him to corporation chairman Marmadukc Hussey led to an assurance that it would not,
after all, be shown.
In his letter to Mr Bermingham, Mr Hussey said he recognised the concern felt about the film, and that many letters had been received objecting to the screening.
Mr Bermingham said he thought that if people wanted to watch films like The Last Temptation, which was made in 1988, they should go to a cinema or get a video. "I don't think this kind of thing should be screened publically.
religious group is wrong, and I think we should have a sense of public morality about this kind of thing.
"I'm absolutely delighted at Mr Hussey's letter, and very grateful to Fr Bullen for bringing the matter to my attention," he said.
