Row over 'blasphemous' film on Jesus hits BBC
A FURORE has broken out over plans by the BBC to show a film about Jesus this autumn.
The BBC received a record number of complaints over Martin Scorsese's film The Last Temptation of Christ, the Broadcasting Standards Council (BSC) revealed this week. BBC plans to show the film drew complaints from 1,054 people, including Catholics.
The film, which portrays Jesus marrying and committing adultery, may not be shown at all. according to the BBC, which bought rights to the film earlier this year.
"This is a record number of complaints and people are concerned about blasphemy but there's nothing we can do unless it is shown," according to the BBC.
According to a BBC spokeswoman the corporation has decided not to show the film in the wake of the avalanche of complaints received: "We often buy a huge number of films and there may be one or two we don't plan to use."
