RIO TO SHOW THE FAITH IN TRIUMPH

Massive procession to begin the congress
°THE news for Catholics from South America has lately all been the sad story of strife in Argentina. But now, in magnificent ceremonies at the International Eucharistic Congress in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil is to tell how "Faith moves mountains, crosses oceans and grows on the altar of sacrifice."
Those words will appear on
one of the banners that are to be carried in an immense procession in honour of the Holy Eucharistic through the main streets of Rio de Janeiro on Sunday. July 17, the opening day of the congress.
Ii will tell the history of Brazil since its discovery 455 years ago by Pedro Alvares Cabral, who called the country the Land of the True Cross.
Heading the procession will be the band of the military police, followed by 150 members of the crew of the Santa Maria, the liner which is taking Cardinal Cerejeira, Patriarch of Lisbon. and Cardinal de Gouveia of Lourenco Marques from Lisbon to Rio.
The sailors will wear the ancient garb of Portuguese mariners.
Seminarians in the procession will display symbols recalling the celebration of the first Mass in Brazil hy Fr. Henrique de Coimbra, a Franciscan priest who sailed with Alvares Cabral.
'First pilgrim'
In the procession too there will be Brazilian naval, army and air force contingents, and units of the uniformed police carrying the shield of the city of Rio de Janeiro and a statue of St. Seha%fiats, patron of the capital. The official name of the capital is the City of San Sebastian of Rio de Janeiro.
Another part of the parade will recall the designation of Rio de Janeiro by the Holy Father as the scene of the 36th International Eucharistic Congress. Students will carry the flag of the Holy See and pontifical banners, as well as a Papal mitre.
The procession will end with the triumphal entry of the " First pilgrim. Our Lady Aparecida (Appeared), patroness of Brazil, who presides over and blesses the opening of the 36th International Eucharistic Congress."
Our Lady has been specially honoured under this title since 1717, when some Sao Paolo fishermen discovered a small, dark image of Our Lady in their net while fishing in the Paraiba River. The statue remained at first in the home of one of the fishermen. but it is now in a national shrine.
Pilgrims from more than 30 countries will be at the week-long congress. Each group will he assigned a special church so that the Cardinals or Bishops representing the various countries may offer Masses for their countrymen and preach to them in their own language.
Byzantine Rite
Each of the foreign delegations will also have a special place in the gigantic Congress Square at Guanabare Bay where the Pontifical Masses and other solemn events of the congress will take place.
National committees already at work represent Germany, Austria, Spain, Italy, Portugal, Lithuania, Argentina, Belgium, France. Holland, Ireland, Lebanon, Hungary, Switzerland, Czechoslovakia.
There is also a joint Englishspeaking committee for Australia, Canada, Great Britain and the United States.
One of the most brilliant ceremonies will be the Pontifical Mass of the Byzantine Rite offered by six prelates in the great plaza, headed by the Melkite Patriarch, His Beatitude Maximus IV Saigh of Antioch.
