Sutherland painting for London church

BEHIND the High Altar in St. Aidan's Church, East Acton, will soon he placed a large painting of the Crucifixion by the celebrated artist Graham Sutherland. The painting, which will be twelve feet across and eighteen feet high, will be the first work that the artist has executed for a Catholic church.
Mr. Sutherland, who is a convert, has already done preliminary sketches which show a dark cross on a predominately red background. He has visited the church to get an impression of the surroundings for his painting. As it will probably be too large for his Kent studio, he intends to finish it in a nearby stable after his final sketches have been approved. and he has been given a model of the church interior to help him in his work.
St. Aidan's already possesses works of ant by Roy de Maistrc, F. M. Fourmaintraux, Arthur Fleischmann, George Campbell and Adam Kossowski. The parish priest is Fr. James Ethrington.
