Sutherland : 'eloquent protestor'

GRAHAM Vivian Sutherland — right — the man who was dubbed "the outstanding British painter of his time," has died. aged 76.
A convert to Catholicism, Sutherland identified deeply with both human suffering and the agonies of Christ. His canvas of the crucifixion in St Matthew's Church, Northampton, was described as being "the eloquent protest of a man who has examined with wonderment and pity the photos of Buchenwald, Auschwitz and Belsen."
Art critic Terence Mullaby wrote of him, "Ile, more than any other twentieth century artist, has expressed the life force. In a sense, everything he has ever done has been a religious painting."
His most famous works include the "Christ in Glory" tapestry in Coventry Cathedral, and "Crucified Christ", at St Aidan's, East Acton.
