Barbara Barclay Carter dead
MISS Barbara Barclay Cartes, whose death this week is an
nounced, will long be remembered as the English associate and discipe of Don Sturzo, the founder and leader of the pre-war Italian Christian-Democrats who opposed Mussolini and many of whom suffered exile or imprisonment for their ideals.
Miss Carter's home in Notting Hill became, under the inspiration of Don Sturzo a centre of ChristianDemocracy in its unpopular days, and political workers and refugees from all Europe discussed and worked together for the Christian anti-Fascist cause. Books and pamphlets were written, and the monthly People and Freedom was founded under Miss Carter's coed i torshi p.
This circle or salon, under the guidance of Don Sturzo and Miss Barbara Barclay Carter, was something unique in English life.
Miss Carter who became a Catholic in 1921, studied in France and was herself an Italian scholar. An indefatigable translator of the important works of Don Sturzo both religious and political, she wrote a number of hooks, including a study of the life of Dante.
