DISAPPOINTING —B. Barclay Carter
The great rise of Christian democratic parties throughout Europe was described by Miss Barbara Barclay Carter, in her second lecture to the C.S.G. Summer School.
She gave a brief account of her Impressions formed during visits to seven countries in the. past year.
She expressed disappointment with the M.R.P., in France, considering that there was a danger that the Right wing section, with its extreme nationalism, might crush the real Christian Demo cratic section. There was a serious conflict inside the party and its reflection could be seen in the varied articles in its daily, L'Aube.
The Catholic Party in Belgium was in a very strong position because it had a longer history behind it and greater experience,
As an illustration of the difficulty of judging by names, Miss Carter quoted the leader of the Luxemberg Christian Democratic Party as saying that if he lived in England he would vote Labour, and if in Canada he would vote C.C.F., yet his party is called "The Party of the Right."
A further difficulty was illustrated by the Catholic People's Party in Holland, which is definitely to the Right yet has a capital levy in its programme.
Miss Carter also described the rising Christian Democratic Parties in South America.
