HEADMASTER OF AMIPLEFORTH PRESENTS SPORTS PRIZES
The Right Rev. Dom Adrian Taylor, F.R.H.S., M.A., M.O., 0.S.B., Abbot of Ramsgate, presided at the distribution of prizes at the Abbey School, Ramsgate, on Saturday, July 1, and in a humorous speech extended a welcome to the many parents and other guests.
The prizes were distributed to the boys by the Rev. Dom Paul Nevill, M.A., 0.S.B., headmaster of Ampleforth College.
In his speech Fr. Nevill said that he had had ample opportunity to judge the Abbey School by its finished products; some fifty or sixty boys from Rarnsgate had passed through his hands, so that. he had formed a clear idea of the results of training at St. Augustine's.
The headmaster, the Rev. Dom David Parry, B.A., 0.S.B., reported a successful school year in all departments. The principal academic results were scholarships at Ampleforth, Douai, Beaumont and Cotton, and an Exhibition at Beaumont. The school had also been quite successful in sport.
Tea was served on the lawn, and the boys presented The Tempest in the school theatre, a performance which was worthy of the school's Shakespearian tradition.
Among those present were: the Right Rev. Bishop Thompson, 0.S.B., the Right Rev. Abbot T. E. Egan, 0.S.B., the Rev. Thomas Sherlock, MA., headmaster of St. Edmund's College, Ware, Count and Countess Rivarola, and Mr E. J. Carroll.

The Mayor of Ilford (Councillor C. A. Farman) used his casting vote recently in favour of the proposal of the Very Rev. Canon Palmer, parish priest of SS. Peter and Paul, Ilford, that the Borough Council should contribute towards the cost of building a senior school for 320 children at a cost of 120,000.
The Education Committee had recommended a grant of 50 per cent, of the purchase price of 19,000 for the land, and of 75 per cent. of the £20,290 for the building. When the Borough Council divided on the motion, it was found that 17 members were in favour of the grant and 17 were against it. The Mayor used his casting vote in favour of awarding the grant.

Slav Liturgy Instead of Mid-day Benediction
On Tuesday, June 27 last, visitors to the well-known City church of St. Mary Moortields, accustomed to the mid-day Benediction service, must have been a little astonished, and perhaps a little awed, to see in place of their usual service a Slav Byzantine Holy Liturgy in course of celebration.
By invitation of the Rector (the Rev. Arthur Reys), Father Ryder, S.J., sang the Liturgy to the accompaniment of the Byzantine Catholic Choir.
