No Choice For Winners Of State Scholarships

—SAYS HEADMISTRESS
By a Staff Reporter
At the prize-giving at the Bar Convent School, York, in welcoming the announcement that State scholarships to universities are to be considerably increased, Mother Campion (headmistress) commented.
Some of the successful candidates have been allocated to universities not of their own choosing. We view this with great concern and also the fact that there is no appeal against it."
State scholarships. she said, already accepted at one university, have had to transfer to another. This seems somewhat arbitrary when girls of lower academic achievement may go where they please, if there is accommodation, but a winner of a State scholarship has no choice.
"We hope," she added, "that some pressure may be brought to bear in this matter in order that our individual liberties may be preserved."
