'peer among their ranks
THE New Year's honours list this year appears more remarkable for who was left off, rather than for those included.
Among Catholics who were expected to be honoured is Sir Michael Palliser, the former head of the Foreign Office. It is normal for retiring Foreign Office heads to be given a peerage.
The failure of the Prime Minister to recommend Sir Michael for a peerage was criticised by Mr Denis Healey on BBC radio at the weekend. But Sir Michael declined to comment on the matter.
There is a widely held opinion that Mrs Thatcher is waiting on the result of the Frank1' --Nrr
on the lead-up to the Falklands war before deciding how Sir Michael's retirement should be recognised. Mrs Thatcher's political critics have detected a good deal of friction between herself and the Foreign Office over the handling of the Falklands.
Among well-known Catholics who did receive honours were Max Bygraves, the entertainer, and Mr Tom Burns, former editor of The Tablet, who are given OBEs.
The Prime Minister of Fiji, Ratu Sir Kamisese Kapaiwa Tuimacilai Mara PC, is promoted GCMG. At home, Sir Nevil Macready, Managing Director of Mobil Oil, is awarded a CBE.
Other recipients of the CBE include: Monsignor John Mackay, Bishop of Auckland, New Zealand, for services to Education; Patrick Nuttgens, Director, Leeds Polytechnic' Among those awarded OBEs were: Professor Tom Carbery, Deputy Chairman, Scottish Consumer Council; Patrick Flynn, lately Deputy Assistant Commissioner, Metropolitan Police; Wing Commander John Lumsden, RAF; Group Captain Roger O'Brien, RAF; Lieutenant-Colonel Maurice O'Dea, RAOC.
Warrant Officer J. Doherty, Royal Signals, received an MBE.
