Cafod hits the target
THE CATHOLIC Fund for Overseas Development drought appeal will today reach its initial target of 000,000.
The appeal, launched in May by the bishops of England and Wales, is being administered by Cafod at their Brixton offices. Each day collections from parishes up and down the country arrive.
Julian Filochowski, the director of Cafod, has praised the generosity of the donations, and said that the appeal would reach a final figure of up to one million pounds.
Cafod continue to channel the funds that arrive straight out to the worst affected areas. One Cafod partner working in a particularly drought-stricken region has written that "in some villages there is no food at all. One family I met had buried three children in a single day. Water is very scarce. A road is being built through the area and the builders use water, brought from another district, to help lay the tarmac. Women wait by the roadside with pots and collect water as it runs down from the new road surface".
