£1,000,000 raised by CAFOD
THE Catholic Fund for Overseas Development (CAFOD) has raised £1 million in the past three weeks from Catholics in England and Wales responding to the Bishops' appeal for the drought crisis in Africa.
The money was raised at special collections in churches on Sunday, June 21, following the appeal called for by the bishops for the millions of Africans suffering from drought and the ensuing hunger.
The special collection is part of CAFOD's Food for Life campaign which not only provides relief food but aims to achieve a guaranteed supply of food every year.
CAFOD's Angelo Simonazzi. hack this week from Mozambique, called the situation in the drought-ridden country "far more serious" than original Western predictions, with the number of starving reaching more than three million. The money from the bishops' appeal, said Mr Simonazzi, "will go a long way to relieve suffering in Mozambique and in many other African countries."
The money raised by the appeal will be channelled by CAFOD in several emergency grants, including funds for medicine, seeds and milkpowder.
