Cathedral designer built first in Notting Hill

TUCKED away at the end of Pottery Lane, Notting Hill, London W11, is the historic church of St Francis of Assisi.
Designed by John Bentley, who later became famous as the architect of Westminster Cathedral, it has been described as "one of the most beautiful little chapels in England". Now it is one of the most important listed buildings in the area.
In 1983 the church was restored and a bustling community centre was opened across the courtyard.
Today, as many as 40 different nationalities meet here to pray, share and grow together in the love of God.
Fr Oliver McTernan is parish priest. On June 18 at 8 pm there is a concert in aid of the St Francis Maintenance Trust. Tickets £4, including buffet. Details from 01-727-7602.
