Pressures on women
I want to write in and express my full support for the points made by Joanna Nash about Women's Liberation recently. There is no doubt that Catholic women should be on their guard against things that are being done in the name of "women's rights" at the present time.
Typical has been the way in which opposition to the proposed Abortion Amendment Bill has been skilfully organised through the trade unions, and women have been pressurised by a tiny minority into calling for abortion on demand.
It should be made clear to every Catholic that the Communists are trying to use the cause of women's equality, as they have used other causes in the past, to create bitterness and disruption in society.
Catholics, who have an authentic and challenging
answer to Wornen's Liberation in the form of a genuine and visionary picture of the positive side of a woman's role, must seize every chance to speak out against this appalling political exploitation, which is driving International Women's Year away from the ideals of "Equality, development and peace" and into disorder, division, and bickering.
It is quite wrong for Catholics to start inventing "red herrings" about women priests or arguing about the role of women in the Church. We should be standing firmly in opposition to the extremists and not creating bad feelings within the People of God.
I may add that to young people, such division not only looks tragic hut very silly too, as we come so often into contact with the ruthlessness and deter% mination of the Cominunist side, and it seems laughable to us that some people on the Christian side actually appear to feel that we have time to argue over petty things between ourselves?
The Catholic Herald was quite right to publish Miss Nash's article, and in doing so has struck a real blow for commonsense and reality in International Women's Year. Many readers will be saying — carry on the excellent work!
