Pr HE Catholic population in Durham and Northumberland has increased by nearly 56.000 in the last 12 months.
The new edition of the Hexham and Newcastle diocesan directory. giving these figures, states that the total Catholic population for Durham and Northumberland is 272,917. Converts in the last year numbered 656. There were 53,917 children in schools throughout the diocese—an increase of over 600.
Priests in the diocese number 443: candidates for the priesthood total 133 junior and 63 senior. There are 167 parish churches in the diocese and 44 convents.
