`UPS' FOR HEXHAM
Bishop's jubilee ACCORDING to the Northern
Catholic Calendar, just issued, the Catholic population of Northumberland and Durham— forming the Hexham and Newcastle Diocese, is almost 3,500 up. the figure for 1959 being 267,657 as against that for 1960 of 271.140.
Converts showed a slight increase-713 as against 658: marriages totalled 2,755 (a decrease from 2,862) and baptisms numbered 7,954 as against 7,801. The number of clergy in the diocese numbered about the same — 371 secular apd 68 regular. Bishop Cunningham is amongst the ten priests in the diocese who are this year due to celebrate their silver jubilees in the priesthood. Fr. William Lamb, parish priest of Our Lady Immaculate and St. Cuthbert. Crook. will be the diocese's only golden jubiliarian this year.
