"Small Christian Groups Will Convert England"
By a Staff Reporter " We must preach by our works," said Mgr. Edward Myers, Bishop of Lamus, addressing t h e packed Church of SS. Anselm and Cecilia,
Kingsway, London, during a Pontifical High Mass last Sunday, in commemoration of the Feast of Our Lady of Good Counsel.
The address was an appeal for recognition of and support for the Society of Our Lady of Good Counsel, the Catholic organisation of banisters and solicitors who give free legal aid to the poor, regardless of religion.
Mgr. Myers commended the society as a sound and practical exposition of simple Christian teaching. Each of us to-day has a duty to stem the tide of Secularism by a two-fold action, on ourselves first, then as a result upon others. " Christianisation of England will follow as a result of organised activities of small Christian groups."
Why Help is Needed
The society, said Bishop Myers, was suffering from the defection of many subscribers who having voluntarily assumed obligations had forgotten them. In war-time all the more the society needed funds and the help of professional Catholic lawyers.
The law, owing to recent legislation, is getting more and more complicated. In addition to the expense of maintaining its officers the society also requires funds for the payment of court fees, witnesses' fees, copies of documents, travelling expenses, etc.
Anyone needing the society's help attends at the offices at 6, Maiden Lane, and is interviewed by the lady almoner, who satisfies herself as to his or her poverty. The particulars are set out and passed on to a solicitor who deals with that type of case. The solicitor then interviews the applicant and, if needs be, consults counsel, who is instructed in the usual way, but who accepts no fee. A fuller account of the work of the society appeared in the CATHOLIC HERALD dated April 19.
