ORDINATIONS Southwark
On Sunday, October 27, the Most Rev. Peter Amigo, Archbishop-Bishop of Sorithwark, conferred the subdiaconate on John Stephenson at the Church of the English Martyrs, Walworth. The Rev. J. Stephenson, previously vicar of St. Jude's, St. George's Road, Southwark, was received into the Church in 1943, at the age of 55. He has studied at the Beds College since 1943 and proceeds this Friday to Rome for his last year's study preparatory to the priesthood.

SOCIETIES Woolwich C.P.E.A,
On October 27 the Woolwich C.P.E.A. held its annual general meeting. After the formal business of the meeting a statement was made by the Very Rev. Canon W. H. Mark on the situation regarding a Catholic secondary school for Woolwich. krom this it was clear that the L.C.C. are unable to provide a site and would be unable to do so for a very long time. Several members expressed the view that the
available land was to be had but that it was under military control. It was decided to press the appropriate authorities. A resolution was passed unanimous!), protesting against the treatment of Archbishop Stcpinac.
R.I.P.
CANON KEARNEY Hundreds of parishioners followed the cortege of the late Canon P. Kearney, former rector of St. Joseph's Church, Stockport, to the cemetery after Requiem Mass last Thursday. The Canon was 68. He was parish priest of St. Joseph's from 1929 until his retirement a few months ago. Ordained in Rome in 1931, he was a Doctor of Divinity of the Gregorian University, and a Doctor of Philosophy. His first curacy, 1934 to 1906, was at the Church of St. Phillip end St. James, Stockport.
MGR. .J. O'REILLY
The death of the Rt. Rev. Mgr. James O'Reilly, 0.B.E., K.C.H.S., took
place at Deepcut Cottage, Shute, Ax
minster, on October 22. Born at Gibraltar in 1873, educated at St. Patrick's College, Carlow, ordained ht 1598, he worked for six years at Portarlington before joining the Royal Navy as Chaplain. He was among the first group of priests to receive the King's Commission. At the outbreak of the 1914-1918 war he was appointed Senior Catholic Chaplain to the Grand Fleet, and served in H.M.S. Cumberland, Albion, Duncan, Argyll, Dreadnought, Canada, and was on board the Neptune at the Battle of Jutland. During this period he was shipmate of the present King, and was decorated with the 0.13.E. in 1919. After the war he was transferred to the Army, and acted as Senior Catholic Chaplain at Salisbury, Malta, Alexandria, Cologee and Aldershot. While there, he was appointed First Class Chaplain with the rank of Colone. He was made a Dome:tic Prelate and received from Pope Pius XI the Order of K.C.H.S. in 1922.
His funeral took place at the Catholic Cemetery, Axminster. on October 25. after Requiem High Mass sung by a choir of priests of the Plymouth diocese.
THE REV. W. ALLEN
Fr. William Allen, an American priest, of the diocese of Lafayette, Louisiana, who had been living for the past seven years in the parish of Stoke Newington. where he had been assisting the parish priest, Fr. Hyde, was killed instantly on Monday hist, when he was knocked off his bicycle by a motor lorry in the Seven Sisters Road, Stoke Newington. Fr. Allen, who was 54, was well known in the parish He gave lantern lectures on religious art, and was a composer of music. He was also the secretary to the Irish Geneological Society in London. Conditional absolution was given by Fr. James Evans, S.J., at the mortuary. Solemn Requiem Mass will be held at 10.15 am. on Saturday, November 2, at Our Lady of Good Counsel, Stoke Newington. An inquest will be held on Saturday at St. Pancras.
SISTER MARY PATRICK
We regret to announce the death, at the Mother House of the Congregation of St. Joseph of the Apparition, Whatley Range, Manchester, of Sister Mary Patrick (Sara McAsey). The Sister was 93 years of age and a native of Dublin. She entered religion at the age of 31. She served in Malta. She spent 35 years on the Burmese mission, where she was decorated with a medal for public service. She left that country 18 years ago and spent the remainder of her life in Manchester. Throughout her life in the city she was constantly visited by high officials from Burma, who cherished the memory of a great missionary Sister who had served well and long in their country.
