PMG says 'no' to Synod stamp

The Postmaster General has turned down a suggestion from the Archbishop of Canterbury and Sir Alex Spearman, M.P. for Scarborough and Whitby, that a special commemorative stamp should be issued for the 1,300th anniversary of the Synod of Whitby which is to be observed this summer.
However, Catholics and other denominations who are joining in a pageant to celebrate the Synod. heard recently that letters from Whitby will be franked with the Synod Emblem as they pass through the Whitby Post Office.
The pageant is to take place in the Abbey grounds June 2-6. Catholic celebrations will include a Pontifical High Mass sung. by Bishop Brunner of Middlesbrough on June 21 in the Abbey ruins, with Bishop Dwyer of Leeds giving the address.
