More arrests and :failings
Arrest and imprisonment of more priests, the expulsion of Benedictine missionaries, and the opening of a campaign against monks and monastries are among the latest moves by the Czech Communist Government in its many-sided attack upon the Church.
On the other side. of the picture, however, there were also repo,tts of large numbers of Catholics responding enthusiastically Oa the privilege of gaining Holy Year indulgences without going to Rome.
And Mgr. de Liva, who was expelled from Prague last week is reported as saying that " never in the history of Catholicism was the Pope revered by the faithful of Czechosolvakia as now."
The latest priest to be imprisoned is Fr. Porizek, who was charged with 13 others with .spying. and was given a 13 years jail sentence.
Jaroslav Vetejska, who appeared in the dock with him was sentenced to death.
Among arrests reported is that of Fr. Jan Urban. founder of the Catholic University of Prague. Three other arrests are reported by Vatican Radio : Fr. Mikulasek, and Fr. Kajpr. both Jesuits, and a Dominican Fr. Braito.
In Dachau
The two Jesuits were arrested after a 34-hour police search of the Jesuit premises in Prague. The Redemptorist and Salesian headquarters in Prague have also been searched and ransacked.
Fr. Kajpr was four years in Dachau, the notorious concentration camp, with Archbishop Beran.
The last two Czech-American religious serving in Czechoslovakia, Fr. Cherf. 0.S.B., and Bro. Dvorak, O.S.B. have been expelled and have reached Rome. Fr. Cherf was prior of Broumov and Bro. Dvorak was his secretary.
The influential Communist weekly Tvorhu has started a campaign against monks and monastries, alleging that they are used for the organisation of " broad anti-State activities."
The paper said that the Church has taken fight against the Government underground and is using " veiled. semi-illegal forms which will be more difficult to discover."
Red resigns
Josef Plojhar, ex-priest turned Communist Minister, last week insolently advised " Archbishop Beran and the other Bishops to ' ignore orders from the Vatican " if they want peace.
Another attack came from Minister of the Interior Vaclav Nosek who described the Bishops as " reactionaries hiding under the clerical coat " and warned all clergy that they would be prosecuted if they continued " to violate the nation's laws."
Alexi Cepicka. head of the Government's Office for Church Affairs has resigned his position as Secretary of the Central Action Committee " in order to devote more time to other respiansibilities."
