Jewish gesture
THE Vatican is looking to make a gesture to sooth Jewish anger after the Pope's recent meeting with Austrian President and suspected war criminal, Kurt Waldheim, according to Jewish groups.
After meeting several top Vatican officials this week, Rabbi Marc Tanenbaum of the American Jewish Committee said: "I have the impression that they are actively considering some kind of gesture or statement that would seek to improve the situation."
One suggestion for such a gesture would be for the Pope to receive Israel's ambassador to Italy, Mordechai Drory.
The Vatican's anxiousness to smooth ruffled feathers is due to threats from Jewish groups in America to boycott the Pope's September trip.
