Jewish dialogue resumed

CATHOLIC-JEWISH dialogue resumed at an international level this week in Prague after a stormy three year estrangement caused by a series of disputes over papal actions.
The meeting in Prague which ended yesterday of the CatholicJewish Liasion Committee was originally planned for December 1987 but was postponed after Jewish anger at the Pope's meeting in June of that year with Austrian President Kurt Waldheim, accused of Nazi war crimes.
Efforts to revive the dialogue in 1988 an! 1989 failed a: the Pope met Waldheim for a second time and Carmelite tuns remained at the Nazi death camp of Auschwitz despite an agreement with Jewish leaders to transfer:o another site.
The Prague gathering, held under the auspices of the Vatican Commission for Religious Relations with the Jews and t he International Jewish C ommittee on I nterreligiou s Consultations, discussed anti-semitism and "racial ad ethnic tensions" that have at-isen in the new democracies in eastern Europe.
