Jesuits slam US role in El Salvador

THE HEAD of the Jesuits has attacked US officials for "sometimes obstructing the search for the truth" in the enquiry into the 1989 massacre by right-wing troops of six Jesuits in El Salvador.
Fr Peter-Hans Kolvenbach said in Rome this week that the officials' "silence" during investigations into the killings "is grounds for complaint".
Fr Kolvenbach was speaking for the first time of the Jesuit massacres in the city of San Salvador. His comments came just after the publication of the United Nations "Truth Report" the findings of a commission of enquiry into the shootings.
He told the Italian religious affairs monthly 30 days: "As the monitors of how considerable US subsidies to the Salvadoran army were used and as observers of the war, many US Army people were witnesses to the activities of Salvador."
