Jesuit anger at US
AMERICAN State Department officials were accused this week by a Jesuit leader of obstructing an investigation into the murder of six priests in El Salvador in 1989.
Fr Jose Maria Tojeira, Jesuit provincial for Central America, said his order's lawyers had been denied access to a special hearing on the case to be held in the United States. Former staff members of the US embassy in San Salvador will answer questions about the killings sent to them by Ricardo Zamora, the Salvadoran judge who is investigating the case.
"The State Department is seriously hindering the case by preventing embassy staff members from replying to questions or cross-examination that our representatives might carry out," Fr Tojeira told a press conference in San Salvador.
A State Department official denied the charge. He said neither Jesuit delegates nor any other party in the case would be allowed to attend the hearings.
