Prince Charles finds protesters in Ireland

THE PRINCE OF WALES this week became the first senior member of the Royal Family to make a formal visit to the Republic of Ireland since the foundation of the state in 1922.
King George V was the last monarch to make a state visit to Ireland, when he went on a coronation tour with Queen Mary in 1911.
Prince Charles, on a whistle stop tour of the country, was officially welcomed by Tanaiste Dick Spring, and then flew to the British ambassador's residence in Sandyford, Co Dublin for a garden party in honour of the Queen's birthday.
The garden party was followed by a dinner at Dublin Castle hosted by the Taioseach, John Bruton, and attended by around 250 business people and politicians.
On Thursday morning, the Prince visited Trinity College, Dublin to see the Book of Kells before having lunch with the President, Mary Robinson. He then spent the afternoon visiting the pre-historic grave at Newgrange, Co Meath.
The Prince's visit was marked by heavy security, and several protests were organised at his visit. It was uncertain whether the Prince, in a private capacity, visited Mullaghmore in Co Sligo, where his uncle Lord Mountbatten was killed by an IRA bomb in the summer of 1979.
Bertie Ahern, the Fianna Fail leader, said that the visit was a "good signal" for the peace process.
