CHELSEA PILGRIMAGE TO WALSINGHAM Reparation for Sacrilege

Seven motor-coaches left St. Mary's, Cadogan Street, Chelsea, last Sunday, on the annual pilgrimage to Walsingham. Before leaving, the 200 pilgrims gathered before the steps of the church to receive the " Pilgrims' Blessing " from the Rev. A. Welland, who led the pilgrimage.
On arrival, the story of Walsingham and its Shrine, its foundation, its destruction and its revival, was related by Mr. H. M. Gillett.
Gathering in front of Greyfriars in the Friday Market Place, they were joined by a party of sixty led by Canon Monk from Woolwich. All sang the Credo, and then walked in procession to the Slipper Chapel reciting the rosary, singing hymns, and carrying a statue of Our Lady brought from Chelsea, together with a large candle which is to burn before the Shrine during the year.
In the meadow adjoining the Slipper Chapel, a sermon was preached by the Rev. B. Scott James, followed by Benediction given by Canon Monk,
It was a pilgrimage of reparation for the sacrilege committed 400 years ago, when on July 18. 1538, the statue of Our Lady of Walsingham arrived in Chelsea to be burnt.
