On the day Mgr. Jachym drew back from episcopal consecration in Vienna Cathedral, the death was announced of the Archbishop of Cincinnati. Mgr. McNicholas, 0.P., who was appointed to a see he never occupied. The late Mgr. Chartrand, Bishop of Indianapolis, accepted nomination as Archbishop of Cincinnati but withdrew at the eleventh hour.
Meanwhile. Mgr. McNicholas had been appointed to Indianapolis. but did not go to the city because Mgr. Chartrand was still there.
Mgr. Chartrand was permitted by the Holy See to retain the see, and Mgr. MeNicholas went to Indianapolis in his place.
Between the two world wars. an official French directory, the Annuaire Catholique. listed 15 prelates and priests who had been appointed to episcopal sees but, at a late hour. obtained the Holy See's permission to decline the honour.
One of these was the late Fr. Albert Knapp, 0.11., of St. Dominic's Priory. London, who was nominated Archbishop of Port of Spain. Trinidad.
In none of these 15 cases, however, had the consecration ceremony been definitely arranged.
