THE POPE has accepted, on account of ill-health, the resignation of Mgr. Beckman, Archbishop of Dubuque, and conferred upon him the Titular Archbishopric of Full.
THE ANNUAL VATICAN RETREAT will open on Sunday, December 1 and continue until Saturday, December 7. The spiritual exercises will be conducted by Fr. Massaruti, S.J., in the Vatican Palace.
THE SACRED CONGREGATION OF RITES has issued a decree, Tura. for the cause of canonisation of Blessed Catherine Labourc, of the Institution of Charity of St. Vincent de Paul, and Blessed Joseph Cosset), Confessor.
TEE SACRED CONGREGATION OF RITES considered on November 12 the introduction of the cause of the Servants of God, Antonio Maria da Lavaru, O.F.M. Cap., Carlo Maria Schilling, of the Congregation of the Barnabites.
AFRICA
A GALE which recently struck Lower Volta, reports Fides. caused considerable damage in the Vicariate. Roofs were taken off schools, walls were broken down and much furniture was destroyed. In one place a new school, completed except for windows, was reduced to a pile of clay. The Vicariate of Lower Volta is under the care of the Society for African Missions, Lyons.
ARGENTINE
The following APPOINTMENTS in the Hierarchy' of Argentina are announced from Rome, Mgr. Geminiano Escorto, to be Bishop of Bahiablanca. The Rev. Emilio di Pasquo to be Bishop of San Luis. The Rev. Sitvino Martinez to be Titular Bishop of Canata and Auxiliary to Cardinal Caggiano, Bishop of Rosario. The Rev, Carlo Aramburu to be Titular Bishop of Paltea and Auxiliary to the Bishop of Tucuman.
AUSTRALIA
PREPARATIONS are already being made for the celebrations of the centenary of the foundation of the diocese of Melbourne, next year. The first Bishop of Melbourne, Mgr. John Alipius Goold, O.S.A., was escorted to his Cathedral Church of St. Francis by a cavalcade of horsemen. The church is still standing and is in the charge of Blessed Sacrament Fathers, from the United States.
CANADA
THE CANADIAN COUNCIL OF CHURCHES, which represents all the Protestant denominations of Canada, have unanimously adopted a motion regretting the illness of Cardinal Villeneuve, Archbishop ot Quebec, and expressing hope for his speedy recovery. Mgr. Pelletier recently informed the clergy of Quebec that the Cardinal, who is convalescing in New York, " is improving day by day."
CZECHOSLOVAKIA MGR. JOSEPH BERAN, recently appointed Archbishop of Prague and Primate of Czechoslovakia, broadcast from Prague Radio on Sunday last. He gave his blessing to broadcasting,
which, he said, should carry light into the remotest quarters of Czechoslovakia.
FRANCE
THE BISHOP OF PUY was present when the Prefect of Haut-Loire presented to Mother Marie-Pia, Superior of the Convent of Montre Don au Puy, with the insignia of Chevalier de la Legion d'Flonneur, and the Resistance Cross, in recognition of her work during the war.
FORTY DIRECTORS of the weekly, La Croix, and other Catholic Action journals from French provincial towns and cities, met recently in Paris after an interruption of eight years. The conferences which took place at the Maison de la Bon Presse, were under the direction of the Rev. Fr. Meriden, editor-in-chief of La Croix.
INDIA
MR. GANDHI, at the opening of a leper institute in the diocese of Tuticorin, recently paid a tribute to Catholic work on behalf of these unfortunates. " The world of politics and newspapers can boast of few heroes of the stature of Fr. Damien, of Molokai," said Mr. Gandhi, " but the Catholic Church can show thousands who, like Damien, have signed away their lives as servants of the lepers. It is well worth inquiring what it is that sustains their heroism."
POLAND
CARDINAL laLOND, Primate of Poland, arrived in Vatican City on Sunday last. He spent a few days in Paris en route where he view with Mgr. Roncalli, Apostolic Nuncio to Paris, and with Cardinal Suhard, Archbishop of Paris.
SPAIN
THE DEATH is announced from Spain of Mgr. Nicaranore Mutiloa, the Redemptorist Bishop of Tarazona and Administrator Apostolic of Teduela. Mgr. Mutiloa, who was 72, was consecrated bishop in 1927 and has been Bishop of Tarazona since 1935. PLA-Y-DENIEL, Archbishop of Toledo and Primate of Spain, recently addressed 200 delegates of the Workers' Fraternity of Catholic Action, which held its national convention in
Madrid. T h e Cardinal stressed the necessity for the principles of the dignity of man. During the convention 16 workers of the Syndicate of Construction were married in a joint ceremony in the cathedral, which was conducted by Mgr. Eijo Garay, Bishop of Madrid-Alcala.
U.S.A.
CARDINAL STRITCH, Archbishop of Chicago, last week celebrated the 25th anniversary of his consecration as a bishop. Three fellow members of the Sacred College and the Apostolic Delegation to the United States, as well as hundreds of other prelates, gathered in the Holy Name Cathedral to participate in the celebrations. Cardinal Stritch received a personal letter of congratulation from the Pope.
MGR. JOHN McNICHOLAS, OP., Archbishop of Cincinnati, was elected chairman of the Administrative Board of N.C.W.C. in Washington, when ten Archbishops and Bishops met to cornpose that body last week. Archbishop McNicholas returns to the Administrative Board after an absence of one year. Archbishop Lucey and Bishop Ready become members for the first time. Cardinal Spellman and Cardinal Stritch retire from the Board after five years' consecutive service under the existing standing orders.
MGR. MARTIN J. O'CONNOR, Auxiliary Bishop of Scranton, New Jersey, has been named the new Rector of the North American College in Rome. Mgr. O'Connor succeeds Mgr. Gerald Kealy, who recently resigned on account of ill-health.
THE DEATH is announced of Mgr. Winkelman, Bishop of Wichita. Mgr. Winkelman, who was only 63, was consecrated Bishop in 1933 and succeeded to the Sea of Wichita in 1939,
