win Rex Toe The Line ?
From Our Own Correspondent
Ara w eR.P.
On Tuesday morning Catholic Belgium was startled by a leading article signed by Leon Degrelle the leader of the Rexist Party in his paper under the headlines: " Will Rex return to the Catholic Party? A straight answer: Never!" It had been hoped in many quarters that the experience of the Cabinet crisis would lead to the formation of a solid party of all Catholics. Referring to the suggestion made at the meeting of the Catholic Party at Charleroi last Sunday that an attitude should be adopted to allow the return of the Rex/six to the Catholic Party, Degrelle stated that " we (the Resists) shall never return to the Catholic Party."
in Charleroi the Catholic Federation pleaded for a re-union of all Catholics in the Catholic Bloc, both Resists and Christian Democrats.
Degrelle goes on to develop the argument that Rex is not an ordinary Party which can enter into coalition with others, but is composed of former adherents to all the other parties from one extreme to the other.
A Horror of Parties
" Rexists have a horror of clans and confessional divisions and of the exploitation by one party of religious sentiments."
" The Parties have become useless," he urges, " and serve ideas that are dead so as to keep and divide among themselves the profits of power."
One thing, however, that must be well kept in mind is this.
All Rexists now may not be Degrell is's. And if, as I suspect, the Parliamentary Rexist members fall into step with the Catholic Farty—Degrelle will be left out ill the cold by his own flock. For let us not forget that the Rex/sirthe bulk —are Catholics first and foremost and for GitiVal's and Degrelle will always count second in their consideration.
