17 AFRICAN BISHOPS

Last of six named in 1956 is consecrated THE consecration of Mgr Ber nard Gantin as Auxiliary Bishop of the Cotonou archdiocese in Dahomey, French West Africa, has brought to 17 the number of Latin rite Negro Bishops in Africa.
Of these, 16 are African by birth and one was born in the Western hemisphere. That one is Bishop Joseph Bowers of Accra, born in Mahaut, a little island near Dominica, British West Indies.
Six African Bishops were appointed during 1956. These are Bishop Yougbare of Koupela, Bishop McHondc, Auxiliary of Dar-es-Salaam; Bishop Kimbondo, Auxiliary of the vicariate of Kisantu; Bishop Citsulo, Vicar Apostolic of Dedza; Bishop Otunga, Auxiliary of Kisumu, and Bishop Gantin, appointed in December.
The first of the 17 was Bishop Kiwanuka, of Masaka, who was appointed on May 25, 1939.
