A high standard is planned rfil,
Tl III first Catholic school of its kind to be built in East Hertfordshire, the Cardinal Vaughan Secondary Modern School, Broxbourne. will be officially openedl on Wednesday by Bishop Cashman. Auxiliary of Westminster.
The Bishop will be deputising for
Cardinal Godfrey who is ill.
The school. opened in January this year, has 340 pupils, both girls and boys with ages ranging from 11 to 15. They come from within a I5-mile radius. which includes Bishop's Stortford, Ware, Puckcridge and Hertford.
Built on a nine-acre site, the school has its own playing fields with all modern amenities, such as gymnasium. changing room, a laundry which provides clean towels for the children, assembly hall with stage, dining, woodwork, metal work, music, geography rooms, workshop, science laboratory, and library. In addition, there are housecraft. cookery and needlework rooms for the girls.
The staff of 18 teachers, some of whom are University graduates, consist of eight men. eight women and two nuns from the Stella Mans Convent at Hoddesdon.
Mr. G. Cookson, the headmaster, a Lancashire man. taught at a Catholic Secondary School at Stoke-on-Trent, and before taking
over at Broxbourne was headmaster at Cheshunt Grammar School. fie is a keen photographer. " We hope once we are established to introduce external examinations and reach eventually to (i.C.E. level," he said.
