POLISH authorities have instigated investigations against Fr Henryk Jankowski, the Gdansk priest who is a close friend of Mr Lech Walesa, the head of the banned Solidarity trade union, for alleged abuse of religious freedom.
Also under suspicion by the authorities is Fr Jerzy Popieluseko, whose Warsaw church devotes a Mass to Solidarity on the last Sunday of every month.
These moves by the Polish government come at a time when the Communist Party is demonstrating concern about its weakened leadership.
General Aaruzelski, leader of the Party, last week made an attack on the Church in a strongly-worded report drawn up by the Politburo.
The Church was warned against meddling in politics "through militant clericalism."
