Polish Primate thanks Cardinal Hume

ARCHBISHOP Josef Glemp, the Primate of Poland has thanked Cardinal Hume and Christians in England and Wales for the aid they have sent to Poland.
The Archbishop, on behalf of the Polish bishops who met in Warsaw on February 25 and 26, thanks Cardinal Hume both for prayers and material help in a letter received at the weekend "By this communio Ecclesiarum Polish Catholics feel encouraged and the Mystical Body of Christ is growing in every good gift," he writes.
In his letter, Archbishop Glemp looks forward to the celebration of the 6 0 Oth anniversary of the image of Our Lady of Jasna Gora. But this week Archbishop Glemp admitted to journalists for the first time that the Pope's visit to Poland to coincide with the celebrations in August might be postponed because of the state imposed emergency. • Conditions in Poland's prison camps for the estimated 3,690 detainees are getting tougher and Solidarity activists are isolated from personal contact with priests, according to Church sources. Mass is still being said in detention camps.
Between 30,000 and 50,000 people attended the Baptism of Maria Victoria, the daughter of Mrs Danuta Walesa, in Gdansk. Lech Walesa, her father, has never seen her. The Baptism was performed by Bishop Lech Kaczmarek of Gdansk. Maria Victoria was born on January 27.
During the ceremony a chair was left empty in the crowded church for Mr Walesa and crowds outside chanted his name and "Victoria" and "Solidarity". Maria Victoria's godfather was Fr Henryk Jankowski, who acted as chaplain in the Lenin shipyards during the strikes of 1980. Her godmother was Maria NowickaMarusczcakowa whose husband is the detained secretary of the Gdansk Solidarity branch.
