Apostolic Nuncio visits Aberdeen
THE POPE'S ambassador to Britain has praised the city of Aberdeen for its importance in Europe and beyond.
Archbishop Faustino Sainz Mufroz, Apostolic Nuncio to Britain, spoke at a gathering of about 100 distinguished guests at a civic dinner held in his honour at Aberdeen Town House of the "significance of Aberdeen as a city of importance, in Europe certainly, but also with links that go much further afield". He said: "In recent years it has also become a major centre of the oil industry, which has brought much needed employment to this area, and attracted persons from many countries, nationalities and languages to make their homes here."
The Apostolic Nuncio, who was in Aberdeen at the invitation of Bishop Peter Moran, also visited Aberdeen University and prayed at the tomb of its founder. Recalling that the university was founded with the authority of the Holy See, Archbishop Sainz Mufioz said: "I was very pleased to discover the link between Bishop William Elphinstone, by whose tomb we now stand, and the Holy See, which authorised the foundation of this seat of learning in 1495."
