Second Africa appeal launched

A JOINT group of five development agencies launched an appeal on thursday evening for the famine victims in Africa.
The Disasters' Emergency Committee, which comprises Cafod, Save the Children, Oxfam, Christian Aid and the British Red Cross, are running the appeal in conjunction with the BBC and ITV. On Thursday evening two Catholics, Frank Bough and Joanna Lumley, appeared on BBC and ITV respectively to announce the appeal, and to highlight the desperate plight of many millions of starving Africans in the face of the worst drought in living memory.
Their appeal was especially for the Horn of Africa and the Salted Region, and will include some of the worst affected areas of northern Ethiopia and Sudan. The DEC appeal is to be administered by Cafod this year. Press and Information Officer, pointed out that the DEC appeal wilt be separate from the Catholic bishops' appeal for Africa which Cafod is also administrating. The bishops' appeal is now completed, with all the dioceses having held their collections, but Cafod expect to be receiving the revenue from those diocesan collections for several weeks to come. They hope to reach a final figure for the bishops' appeal as high as £1 million.
